1. The Party

Invite friends who like the same genre of music, willing to get down, and are unashamed of singing off-key.  Hopefully, you have a few Chinese speakers in your squad, or else you won’t capture the same feeling.

How many people should you invite? Well, it depends on how much mic time you want. If you don’t need a mic to sing your heart out, then, by all means, invite as many people as you want!

2. The Location

Find a place that is big enough for your party and offers a good deal. A lot of Chinese karaoke bars are decorated to appear bougie, but don’t let that deter you!

– Check for happy hour specials, Tuesday night discounts, or party packages. These deals offer you a cheaper rate based on the number of people you bring or the time you go.

CAUTION:  Some karaoke bars are 21+ after a certain time (even if you don’t order alcohol). Make sure you double check to avoid being turned away.

3. The Song Selection

The Chinese music industry is famous for its heart-wrenching ballads. As a karaoke beginner, make sure you are familiar with the classics (low-key these are all my favorite ones to sing). No Chinese karaoke session is complete without singing one of these songs, teary-eyed while holding onto your friend.

4. The Food & Bev Options

Some must-order snacks that (almost) everyone loves:

  • Chicken wings
  • Fried fish balls
  • French fries
  • Fried squid
  • Satay
  • Popcorn
  • Edamame

Drinks (if you’re 21+, then your drink selection depends on if you want the night to be remembered, have a ‘whatever happens at karaoke’ policy, or post everything on Instagram)

  • Watermelon juice
  • Beer
  • Iced Lemon Tea
  • Milk tea (this might hinder your JJ Lin voice though)
  • Honey lemon water (gotta soothe the throat as you go)

5. LET IT GO AND SING YOUR HEART OUT
